Founded in 1978, Saint Sebastian Elementary School is far more than a place of learning. It is a beacon of hope in the region. Thanks to extensive renovations and expansion, the children can now learn in a modern, inclusive environment that not only paves the way for a self-determined future but also actively promotes peaceful coexistence between the Christian and Muslim communities of Bafia. The newly established English-language section now specifically includes the region\u2019s linguistic minority. The school thus provides an environment that overcomes the lines of conflict that have existed for decades along linguistic and religious lines in the heart of the Gondon District in Cameroon\u2019s Central Region and strengthens the community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The PATRIZIA Foundation has successfully overcome local challenges through a holistic approach that encompasses safety, infrastructure, energy, education, and the well-being of children. Today, more than 900 students in grades 1 through 6, as well as the teachers, benefit directly from these comprehensive improvement, especially the many children in the region with physical disabilities. But the school\u2019s positive impact extends far beyond the classroom, strengthening the children\u2019s families and the entire school community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The PATRIZIA Foundation is meeting the local challenges with a comprehensive approach that includes safety, infrastructure, energy, education and well-being. The more than 900 pupils in grades 1 to 6 and the teachers benefit directly from this project, especially the many children in the region with physical disabilities. However, the positive effects of the school will extend further into the families of the pupils. The entire neighbourhood will benefit from the innovative new features at the school.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The previously aging infrastructure with dilapidated school buildings lacking electricity and water connections is now a thing of the past. The school grounds are now designed to be safe, featuring barriers, railings, and accessible play and activity areas. The two buildings are optimally connected by modern walkways, allowing children with disabilities to use all areas without difficulty. Clean, functional restrooms with running water are now available, and key elements for digital education, including a dedicated area for English language instruction and rooms for alternative teaching approaches, have been successfully established.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

A holistic plan successfully implemented<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The comprehensive plan for the sustainable improvement of the school was successfully implemented in two phases. Already in Phase 1, the construction and expansion work fundamentally transformed the exterior of Saint Sebastian Elementary School. The previously scattered facilities were consolidated into a single, modern building. A safe playground and recess area were created for the children, along with accessible facilities for children with disabilities, as well as common rooms and restrooms. A newly drilled well and the installed solar panels reliably provide water and electricity.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Phase 2 focused on further developing the content of the educational concept. A dedicated English-language section was established, digital learning opportunities were created, and teachers and caregivers received comprehensive training. The newly redesigned courtyard now allows for outdoor classes and cultural events, enriching everyday school life in a lasting way.<\/p>\n

Annual monitoring conducted on an equal footing with our partner, along with a systematic impact evaluation spanning five years, measures and assesses the project\u2019s success for the local community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Ekoum's* Story of Change<\/h3>\n

Anyone who sees Ekoum happily in the classroom can hardly imagine what he has already gone through in his young life. After a serious household accident, Ekoum suffered visible burns on his face. At his previous school, he was mocked, avoided, and insulted by classmates, withdrew, and gradually lost faith in ever truly belonging anywhere.<\/p>\n

Then his parents turned to Saint Sebastian School. There, Ekoum experienced for the first time what it means to be welcomed with open arms. The principal and teachers treated him with respect and understanding. No one focused on his external scars \u2013 instead, the emphasis was on who he is.<\/p>\n

The school places great value on community, compassion, and togetherness. In this environment, Ekoum slowly regained trust. He was seen \u2013 as a child with strengths, dreams, and a place of his own in the world.<\/p>\n

Today, Ekoum is fully integrated, actively participates in class, has made friends, and is flourishing. For him, the school is more than just a place of learning \u2013 it has become a safe space where he can grow and thrive.<\/p>\n

Mohamed's* Story of Change<\/h3>\n

Mohamed is eleven years old and lives in Bafia, Cameroon. Despite his young age, he has already faced more challenges than many people do in a lifetime \u2013 as an orphan, he was left to fend for himself for a long time.<\/p>\n

For several years, he got by with odd jobs, but there was never enough money for school fees. One of these jobs, however, changed everything: he met the principal of Saint Sebastian Primary School, who was deeply moved by his story and secured a scholarship-funded place for him.<\/p>\n

Since then, Mohamed has been able to return to school \u2013 with opportunities, structure, and a place where he is welcome. At school, he receives not only an education but also attention, safety, and the feeling of being seen. Teachers support him wherever needed and ensure he has everything required for learning.<\/p>\n

For Mohamed, school represents a second chance. Here he can grow, learn, and build a new life. He especially loves science subjects, participates actively in class, and dreams of one day taking on responsibility himself.<\/p>\n
