In 2014, the PATRIZIA Foundation set a pioneering example in the heart of the Peruvian rainforest. The PATRIZIA Foundation financed the first buildings, which were constructed by students from the universities of Stuttgart and Lima. This was a significant step towards improving educational opportunities in a remote region that is more than 10 hours drive from the capital Lima. The last hour of this journey is on unpaved roads.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Alto Sondoveni, a small village in the heart of the Peruvian rainforest, is home to the Ash\u00e1ninka, an indigenous group of the eastern Amazon basin.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The living conditions for the inhabitants, who mainly live from agriculture, are very challenging due to the lack of infrastructure in the region, which is far away from the peruvian economic centre. In addition, the indigenous population is still subject to systematic discrimination. The children in the village often have to help with household chores or work in the fields from a young age. The lack of schools in Sondoveni and the surrounding areas is an obstacle to the development of children and young people and, subsequently, the entire region.<\/p>\n

By <\/span>building<\/span> a <\/span>small<\/span> <\/span>school<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>three<\/span> <\/span>classrooms<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> PATRIZIA <\/span>Foundation<\/span> <\/span>addressed<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> lack <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>educational<\/span> <\/span>facilities<\/span> and <\/span>offers<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>than<\/span> 60 <\/span>families<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>Sondoveni<\/span> and <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>surrounding<\/span> <\/span>villages<\/span> and <\/span>small<\/span> <\/span>settlements<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>opportunity<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>continue<\/span> <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>education<\/span> after <\/span>primary<\/span> <\/span>school<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Expansion and <\/span>sustainable<\/span> <\/span>development<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The extensive expansion of the school was completed in 2023. All grades from 5 to 10 can now be taught in their own classroom. In addition, a workroom is now available for practical training. <\/span>The school now also benefits from new toilets, a new kitchen and an installed water supply system with a filter for clean drinking water. Attractive accommodation for the teaching staff has been added. These should lead to a reduction in teacher turnover and thus also enable uplifting and quality teaching by motivated teachers with respect for the indigenous culture. This expansion will make it possible to admit more pupils from Sondoveni and the neighbouring villages in future, thereby increasing educational opportunities in the region.A special highlight was created by the special talent of Peruvian artist Jade Rivera at the opening of the extended school.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The classroom buildings are sustainably designed with certified wood. By building a staircase from the village to the school on the slope, the school can now be reached safely and dry-footed even in the rainy season. The volleyball court behind the school is used by the pupils, teachers and residents of the village. The realisation of this project was made possible thanks to the cooperation with apoprojek. On behalf of the children, parents and teachers, we would like to thank apoprojekt and its partners for their generous support in realising this project. The school lays the foundation for children to find a way out of poverty, discrimination and a lack of prospects. Because education is the path to a self-determined life, even in the most remote regions of the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Ready for the Future \u2013 Sondoveni Sewing Studio<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The development of the PATRIZIA School Sondoveni<\/strong> continues: As part of the Ready for the Future programme<\/strong><\/a>, the school has been expanded with a solar-powered sewing workshop. Here, students design their own patterns and create garments while combining traditional Ash\u00e1ninka knowledge with modern skills such as machine sewing, digital design, and embroidery. The next phase of the project focuses on entrepreneurship, the development of a local brand, and creating new market opportunities. In the future, the products will also be offered through an online shop.<\/p>\n

Ines'* Story of Change<\/h2>\n

From the Amazon rainforest to university: Ines\u2019 journey shows what true partnership can achieve.<\/p>\n

Ines is a first-generation student from Sondoveni. Thanks to the prestigious Beca 18 scholarship, she now has the opportunity to continue her education\u2014at one of Lima\u2019s top universities!<\/p>\n

The government-funded support program is aimed at young people with outstanding academic performance and limited financial means, opening the door to higher education. Ines can now study Early Childhood Education at Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in Lima\u2014with all costs fully covered by the scholarship, including accommodation, meals, transportation, and tuition fees.<\/p>\n

She owes this opportunity not only to her talent, but also to the educational pathway we have built in Sondoveni in close collaboration with our local partners. Since the construction of the school, we have been committed to more than just infrastructure: we mentor, connect, and empower. We also worked with the authorities to ensure that children from remote regions such as the Amazon are considered for the Beca 18 program and supported throughout the application process.<\/p>\n

Abraham's Story of Change<\/h3>\n

around 500 children from this remote indigenous village have gained access to education\u2014including Abraham.<\/p>\n

At just 12 years old, he was involved in the construction of the school, full of energy and proud to be part of such an important project. Abraham belongs to the Ash\u00e1ninka people, a nature-connected indigenous community rich in culture and traditions. For them, the school became a bridge to the outside world. Finally, they had access to education\u2014and with it, new opportunities.<\/p>\n

For Abraham, this marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Over the years, the intelligent boy grew into a wise and committed young man. This year, at just 22, he was elected as the tribal chief of the Ash\u00e1ninka\u2014the youngest leader in the community\u2019s history. Education had shaped him into a thoughtful and respected leader.<\/p>\n
